Brass bands are still very much a feature of life in the north of England. Bands from Pennine villages and those associated with former coal mining districts still play to mark special occasions and still draw the crowds.
Great pride is taken in smartness of uniforms as well as in the playing skills of the musicians. There are competitions where bands come from all over the region to test their skills against others.
